What size and thickness you can cut?
The cutting size is generally determined by the size of the table. The most commonly used table dimensions are 3m wide and 2m long, while the table size for metal or stone cutting is 2m wide and 4m long, which covers the sizes of most sheet materials. However, if you occasionally need to cut oversized materials, you don’t necessarily need an extra-large table. You can extend the larger material partially off the table, placing only the cutting section on the table. Although this is not the best option, it can save you a lot of cost as long as it is within the table’s load capacity (usually 500KG/square meter, which can also be increased).
The performance of the high-pressure pump and the length of the Z-axis determine how thick the materials you can cut. A 37KW high-pressure pump with a 0.33 nozzle is best suited for cutting metals up to 15mm thick. If you are cutting very thin sheets, they can usually be stacked together for cutting, increasing production. If you need to cut metal plates thicker than 100mm, APW’s V series high-pressure pump, specifically developed for heavy metals, is the choice. The standard length of the Z-axis is 150mm. If you are cutting very thick materials, such as sponge, PVC, or bulging irregular materials, you can increase the Z-axis distance; APW supports up to 2m in length.
Do I need learn waterjet software?
- Completing waterjet cutting typically requires mastery of 2 or 3 software programs.
- 1. CAD, used for drawing cutting paths and generating DXF files.
- 2. Waterjet cutting software, used for setting up cutting processes (such as pump pressure, cutting speed, nozzle angle, etc.), and controlling the movement of the waterjet. APW offers two software options, NC and ECS. Both include CAM programs that can draw and layout simple graphics.

what level of precision does a waterjet cut?
The traditional 3-axis waterjet cutting head has a cutting accuracy range of ±0.1mm to ±0.3mm. If the thickness exceeds 100mm, the cutting accuracy will decrease. The APW GJ-series of high-precision waterjets can narrow the accuracy to ±0.03mm. Additionally, a 5-axis waterjet can be used, compensating for the accuracy loss caused by the waterjet stream taper.
Can I get bevel or 3D cutting?
This is a consideration that must be made from the outset. Since 2D cutting and 3D cutting require different cutting heads, electrical controls, and software, and retrofitting them later is quite difficult. If you need to cut bevels or surfaces with angles greater than 12°, complex curves of 3D parts, you will need to choose an AC5-axis 3D cutting head. If you only need to make cuts, a 3-axis cutting head is the most economical. If you require less angle compensation, such as for absolute vertical cutting, you can opt for an AB5-axis cutting head.
